Frederick, MD, Canteen Team Served Firefighters Participating in Annual Memorial Service
EMMITSBURG, MD -- Days before those involved in participating in the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial weekend begin their treks here, a team of local volunteers are shopping and stocking their canteen.
Members of the Independent Hose Company say they are proud to provide food for the firefighters from across the country who take part in the annual tribute.
In addition to the usual coffee and donuts, they offer a variety of breakfast sandwiches, fruit and snacks.
Scott Shorrow started cooking eggs before dawn last Sunday.
"Right now, I've gone through 120," he said as a dozen sizzled on the griddle.
Beside him, Dale Harlow was cooking ham.
"We enjoy doing this. Everyone appreicates it," he said, adding that many are surprised to see them cooking."You don't get much fresher than this..."
Members inside the canteen made sandwiches and wrapped them in foil.
The barbeque sandwiches served at lunch are made from large pork butts they smoked for 12 hours.
Kevin Ausherman said the group is used to working as a team to make sure everything is ready.
Ausherman said the team appreciates the response they receive from firefighters.
In addition to a donation jar on the table, there's also a copy of a QR Code.
"They've always been very generous. We realized many firefighters in Class A weren't carrying cash. Many do scane the code and give us a donation," Ausherman said.
Jeff Scire, president of the Independent Hose Company, said the members have always extended a welcome to the survivors and colleagues of the fallen.
"Years ago, we hosted a pizza night for survivors at the firehouse. They really enjoyed it, especially the kids. This is the least we can do for the families who've lost so much..."
