IA Firefighter Dies After On-Duty Medical Emergency

Des Moines fire engineer Douglas E. McCauley, 58, suffered a "major medical event" while on duty.

A 29-year veteran of the Des Moines firefighter died after suffering a medical emergency while on duty Friday.

Fire Engineer Douglas E. McCauley, 58, suffered a "major medical event," according to a release from the department.

McCauley was treated by colleagues and transported to Iowa Methodist Unity Point Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at 10:31 a.m. Saturday.

McCauley has served with the Des Moines Fire Department since October of 1987. He was promoted to Engineer in September 1996 and was assigned to Truck 9.

"We will assist Engineer McCauley’s family during this difficult time and continue to offer our deepest condolences to his loved ones and extended family within our Fire Department," the department said in a statement.
