Police are searching for the driver who struck an Onset firefighter, leaving him critically injured Friday night.
As a storm was passing over the region, Onset firefighters were clearing debris from the road a Onset Avenue and Cranberry Highway around 7:30 p.m.
“Pieces of steel were flying across the road like guillotines,” Onset Fire Chief Ray Goodwin told Wareham Week. “We thought someone was going to get killed.”
The firefighter was injured during a hit-and-run while working alongside the road. Police said the driver did not stop.
The 25-year-old firefighter was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital by Bourne EMS where he is listed in critical condition.
