April 24 -- LOS ANGELES -- A man who opened fire Tuesday as firefighters knocked down a blaze at a Harbor Gateway home is in custody, police said.

The suspect, who appeared to be suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is in critical condition, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A woman was fatally shot at the scene, and police said the shooter may be the woman's son.

Shots rang out after firefighters put out the flames inside a two-story home, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived at the 15400 block of South Orchard Avenue around 4:30 a.m. Four adults and one child were displaced by the fire, the Fire Department said, and the American Red Cross responded to the scene to help them.

Four LAPD divisions as well as Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies responded to the area, authorities said.
