Cape Coral firefighter Christopher Asseff was found dead in his Port Charlotte home Saturday after missing his shift the previous day.

A Florida fire department is investigating the death of an off-duty firefighter over the weekend.

Christopher Asseff died Saturday, the Cape Coral Fire Department said in statement released on social media. Details of how he died were not given.

"He was well-liked, had earned the respect of his crew, and was known as a hard worker with a positive attitude," the statement said Asseff, who joined the department in July 2018. "He was excited to be a brother in the Cape Coral Fire Department and had a promising career in front of him."

Asseff's body was discovered around 8:45 a.m. Saturday in his Port Charlotte apartment by the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the WBBH-TV reports. Deputies were doing a well-being after Asseff didn't report for his Friday shift.

According to WBBH, Asseff was sitting on his spare room's floor at the end of a bed.
