NYC Mayor Under Fire for Vaccine Mandate

FDNY union leadership demands NYC Mayor Eric Adams lift the vaccine requirement for all city workers after a controversial exemption for athletes and performers.

Officials representing the FDNY firefighters’ union are calling on Mayor Eric Adams to lift the vaccine mandate for all city employees after he recently implemented exemptions for athletes and performers.

The heads of two firefighter unions delivered a request of the mayor Saturday to sit down within a week's time to discuss the city's vaccine mandate.

Presidents of the Firefighters Association and FDNY-Fire Officers Association placed an "emergency" call hoping Adams would reconsider his new order and expand the mandate lift to all city employees, NBC 4 New York reported.

The firefighter’s associations said that approximately 400 to 500 firefighters are still unvaccinated and subject to termination. On a weekly basis, they said up to 10 employees receive an ultimatum to receive the COVID-19 vaccination or step down.

Mayor Adam contends he is not setting up a double standard, that he was only trying to close a loophole from the DeBlasio administration that didn’t allow unvaccinated hometown athletes to participate but allowed visiting players to participate.

Union officials said approximately 15 firefighters have been fired since the mandate was implemented.
