Nov. 27, 2022
A homeless man has been charged for striking the Newark captain.

A Newark fire captain was hospitalized on Sunday after being struck by a food can while responding to a blaze at a homeless encampment in the city.

The captain had responded to the fire around 11 a.m. under Route 21 at the 100 block of Riverside Avenue, city officials said in a statement.

When firefighters finished putting out the blaze, a homeless man then “struck a fire captain with a can of food,” the statement said.

The captain, whose name was not released, was taken to University Hospital in Newark with injuries that were not life-threatening. The homeless man was arrested and also taken to University Hospital for crisis evaluation.

The city did not release any other information and said the incident is still under investigation.
