The firefighter who was assigned to a Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest fire crew was killed when the pickup left the road in Coquille.

A firefighter died in a crash in Coos County Friday, officials said.

The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest firefighter was traveling with a work crew when the crash occurred, the forest service said.

The firefighters were driving in a pickup when the truck left the roadway in Coquille, Oregon, according to Coquille Fire and Rescue.

The unidentified firefighter who died was from out of state, the fire department said. Local firefighters are holding a vigil until the person can be returned home.

The department did not say where the firefighter was from, but he or she was stationed on the Oregon coast. A call to the U.S. Forest Service was not returned Saturday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and our fire service brothers and sisters,” Coquille fire said in a statement.
