BLOOMINGTON — A driver accused of intentionally driving through a crash scene and hitting a firefighter Thursday in southeast Bloomington was arrested, authorities said.

A 23-year-old Bloomington man was arrested on initial charges of aggravated battery, reckless driving and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash in connection with the crash reported about 7:30 a.m. at Woodrig Road and Morrissey Drive, police and fire officials said in news releases.

A firefighter struck while directing traffic at the scene suffered minor injuries and was treated by other firefighters at the scene, firefighters said.

No one involved in the crash, including the firefighter, required transportation to the hospital, firefighters said.

"This could have ended far worse than it did,” said Bloomington fire Deputy Chief Jason Greer said in a news release. "We remind every motorist to slow down, move over, and pay attention. Working in roadways is one of the most dangerous environments we face."

A driver intentionally drove through the scene, struck the firefighter and fled the area before police officers arrived, police said. Police were given a partial license plate number.

The McLean County Sheriff's Office and Illinois State Police joined Bloomington police in looking for the vehicle.

The Bloomington Police Department's Real Time Information and Crime Center quickly began working to identify and locate the vehicle, police said. Automated license plate reader technology was used to identify the vehicle's full license plate and determine an area where the vehicle had traveled recently, police said.

The vehicle was found parked in the 1500 block of Calhoun Street in Bloomington. The driver was found nearby and arrested without incident, police said.

He was transported to the McLean County Detention Facility.
