Two Canadian Firefighters Swept Away During Rescue Operation Remain Missing

They were assisting residents escape rising floodwaters from the Gouffre River north of Quebec.

The search is continuing for two firefighters swept away Monday afternoon by the raging Gouffre River.

They were helping the Canadian Coast Guard with evacuations as the river levels continue to rise, according to the Montreal Gazette. 

A command post was set up on the scene, while various specialists from the Emergency Response Unit of the Sûreté du Québec are mobilized on site to help with land, nautical and aerial searches. 

“Given the dangers posed by the sector, we ask citizens not to approach it,”  officials warned.

Two residents of a house about to be swept away were rescued by a  Sûreté du Québec helicopter crew.
