A new memorial at the Zoneton fire station in Shepherdsville was unveiled Sunday morning.
The bronze statutes honors two local heroes -- Chief Rob Orkies and Battalion Chief Garry Key -- who died of COVID-19, WLKY reported.
Zoneton Fire Chief Kevin Moulton said in addition to being mentors, the men's dedication spread beyond the bay doors.
“They were just top-notch men. Again, they just did so much for the community from teaching Little League baseball to helping people on the side of the road if they needed it. The hearts on these two were just huge,” he said. .
Orkies had just begun chemotherapy in September 2020, when he tested positive for COVID-19. He died later that year. A few months later, Key was placed on a ventilator after contracting COVID-19 as well. He died in 2021.
