A fire station was destroyed when a tornado tore through an Alabama town.
Two firefighters were staffing the Eufaula Fire Department's north side firehouse near the Eufaula Municipal Airport when the tornado hit, according to the department. No one was hurt in the damaged station.
"Our station and our fire apparatus can be replaced, but our fellow firefighters can not be. We are so thankful that our two took care of each other through their time of fear, and they escaped injury free," the department stated in a post on social media.
The tornado also caused damaged throughout Eufaula, including downed power lines and trees, WTVY-TV reports. Despite the destruction to one of its stations, Eufaula firefighters contained a natural gas leak from fuel cans possibly one or two vehicles, the report added.
At least 23 people were killed by the tornado that ripped through an area several miles long and a fourth-of-a-mile wide in Lee County, which is about 60 miles east of Montgomery, according to USA Today. First responders also are searching wreckage for missing people.
