Historic CA Fire Station Building Lost to Flames

Jan. 28, 2021
The Stockton Fire Department lost a piece of history when a building that housed Engine Company 6 in the early 1900s was lost to fire.

Firefighters around the country take great pride in their history and traditions, and a cherished piece of history for the men and women of the Stockton Fire Department was lost to uncontrollable flames earlier this week.

The Stockton Fire Department Historical Society posted the sad news on its Facebook page after a fire consumed the historic building that once housed Engine Company 6 over 100 years ago. The building at 527 S. Aurora near Hazelton was commonly referred to by Stockton firefighters as the Old Holt firehouse.

One Monday evening, Stockton crews responded to a fire in the building, but due to the compromised integrity of the aging structure they had to pull back into a defensive firefight. The exact extent of the damage is not mentioned, but judging from a photo of the fire included in the post, the building is likely unsalvageable.

The Stockton firefighters union also posted a short video from the fireground and lamented the loss of the iconic building. "We are saddened not only to see a piece of Stockton History perish but a small part of our Legacy as well," the post says.
