A Safe Haven Baby Box was utilized at Carmel Fire Station 345 when a baby was surrendered this week.

A baby was surrendered at Carmel Fire Station 345 with the use of a Safe Haven Baby Box that alerted fire crews.

In a Facebook post, the department said, “The baby was evaluated and transported to a local emergency room.”

Each box is climate-controlled with an automatic lock mechanism. When the box is opened, a silent alarm is triggered, alerting 9-1-1 dispatch and the fire department of a drop-off. Each costs about $15,000 to install, WLWT 5 reported.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes founder Monica Kelsey told WLWT 5, the effort to equip firehouses with the boxes aims to eliminate situations where babies are placed in danger by women or parents seeking to abandon their infants.
