Texas Dept. Seeks Funds to Replace Truck

RIO HONDO, Texas -- The financially strapped city is counting on insurance money to replace a fire truck that burned Saturday after it got stuck in a field, officials said Monday."It is a loss," City Commissioner Rick Tello said. The 2008 Ford F350 fire truck was priced at about $79,000, Tello said. The gasoline-fueled truck was more of a fire risk than trucks that run on diesel, which is more fire retardant, Tello said. "It got struck when they were trying to stop the fire," Tello said.

"It is a loss," City Commissioner Rick Tello said.

The 2008 Ford F350 fire truck was priced at about $79,000, Tello said.

The gasoline-fueled truck was more of a fire risk than trucks that run on diesel, which is more fire retardant, Tello said.

"It got struck when they were trying to stop the fire," Tello said.

Tello said officials don't know when the insurance company will reimburse the city for the loss.

"We have to work with what we've got," Tello said of the four fire trucks available for the volunteer fire department. "We still have enough trucks to cover the area."

The fire at the intersection of Bishop Road and FM 345 burned about 15 acres and sent a firefighter to the hospital, where he was treated for smoke inhalation, Tello said.
