MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa --

Marshalltown firefighters were told that victims of a fire were trapped on the second floor as they headed to the scene of a fire Thursday morning.

Fire Chief Steve Edwards said crews were called to 116 N. Center Street at 9:17 a.m. because a four-unit apartment building was on fire.

Crews found smoke coming from the second story with flames visible from a window. Edwards said crews found a victim leaning out a second floor window. He said the woman's husband had already jumped to safety, and she had lowered their children out the window to him.

Crews used a ladder to help get the woman out safely.

Edwards said firefighters found the fire on the second floor in the living room of an apartment.

Fire crews were at the scene for about three hours.

Edwards said damage estimates were $25,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents due to fire, smoke and water.

The cause appears to be accidental but remains under investigation, Edwards said.
