Firefighter Accused of Abandoning Crashed FDNY Van

According to police, an FDNY firefighter allegedly struck several cars and a dumpster in Staten Island with a department van and then fled on foot after the vehicle's front axle was badly damaged.

An FDNY firefighter is accused of abandoning a department van after he crashed it into multiple cars in Staten Island last week.

Police took firefighter Robert Diaz, 42, into custody Friday after he fled from the wrecked Fire Education Safety Unit, the Staten Island Advance reports. Witnesses said the van struck into several cars and a dumpster before finally stopping.

Diaz, wearing a black hoodie, allegedly fled the scene on foot after the van's front axle was badly damaged, the Advance added.
