A Massachusetts firefighter was seriously injured from a fall off an apparatus during a funeral procession Saturday.
The Oak Bluffs Fire Department was preparing for a procession for Allan deBettencourt Sr., a captain with the department who died earlier this month at 83, the Martha’s Vineyard Times reports. One of the firefighters had been helping to form a flag arch between two apparatus for the procession to pass under.
“He was on top of the ladder truck,” Oak Bluffs Public Safety Director Erik Blake told the Times. “He was trying to get down, and lost his footing.”
When he fell, the firefighter struck a metal stanchion before landing on the pavement. The firefighter was airlifted to a hospital, and his condition was not known, according to the Times.
