Smoke Billows from Roof at New Orleans City Hall Annex Fire
More than 40 firefighters were needed to contain a fire that was sparked by workers repairing the roof at the old New Orleans City Hall Annex on Sept. 24.
Crews were dispatched at 1:38 p.m. when several 911 calls were received for the fire at 2400 Canal St. Two minutes later, firefighters found heavy dark smoke from the roof of the six-story building that was under construction.
At 1:46 p.m. a second alarm was called and firefighters used an aerial ladder with hoselines through the interior to bring the fire under control at 2:19 p.m. The fire was contained to the roof of the building.
Fourteen fire companies with a total of 45 firefighters responded to the incident.
Accidental ignition of roofing materials is believed to be what caused the fire.
