Photos: Fire Boats Battle Barge Fire on DE Bay
Multiple fire boats worked with a U.S. Coast Guard boat to contain a barge fire on the Delaware Bay near Bowers Monday morning.
The fire was reported around 1 a.m., about nine miles south of Port Mahon, according to WBOC.com.
WGMD.com reports that the barge is 300 feet long.
Six fire boats, along with a 29-foot Coast Guard response boat, responded to battle the intense fire involving use household appliances.
About an hour into the fire, the decision was made to use foam to smoother the intense blaze, according to WGMD.com.
Foam units were called to shore and a ferry was requested to bring additional resources to the scene.
“Our highest priority is ensuring the safety of firefighters and response personnel on scene,” Capt. Jonathan Theel, Sector Delaware Bay Captain of the Port, told WBOC. “We will also work to mitigate any environmental threats and protect the flow of commerce within this vital port.”
