Pumper Destroyed by Flames in Winchester, OH, Firehouse

Before the embers cooled, Wayne Township firefighters responded with a loaner engine for their neighbors in Winchester.

If there's an emergency in Winchester, firefighters will be responding as usual.

What's not the norm right now is that they won't be in their primary apparatus as it was damaged by fire Sunday night.

“I come around the corner, and the building is fully engulfed in smoke, and it’s pushing out of every little nook and cranny that it could push out of,” Winchester Fire Chief Travis Baker told Local 12.

“It’s a miracle that [the building is] still here. As soon as we got the main bay door open where the truck actually was sitting, the. The flames got pretty large. And, you know, we start kind of getting into a little bit of a panic mode there for a minute but kept it under control.”

Firefighters from neighboring departments controlled the flames before they could destroy the firehouse.

"That’s not supposed to happen, right? Like, we’re the fire safety people, not the recipients," the chief added.

Damage was extensive to the front and cab. Now, they're waiting to hear from insurance agents.

Before the embers were cool, firefighters with Wayne Township Fire Department were ready with an offer.

They were asking me like, ‘Hey, there’s a truck sitting in the back of our bay. We don’t really use it for much. Let me make some phone calls and see if it’s kosher, and we'll bring that up here and loan it to you guys for the foreseeable future.’ And I would say by midnight, the truck was here, and they stayed until four in the morning until this truck was ready to go on its first call.”
