CAJON PASS — Two firefighters who suffered injuries after becoming entrapped by the wildfire tormenting the Cajon Pass on Tuesday returned to combat the blaze after being taken to the hospital, authorities said.
San Bernardino County Fire Department officials said six firefighters assigned to the northwest area of Cajon Boulevard were trapped while defending homes and assisting with evacuations in the Swarthout Canyon area.
Fire officials said the firefighters were able to take shelter within a nearby structure, but two of the firefighters suffered minor injuries.
The firefighters were transported to a local hospital where they were treated and released. Fire officials said the two were back on the fire line defending structures threatened by the blaze.
A County Fire engine also suffered moderate fire damage.
Fire officials reminded residents to be prepared and know evacuation routes in the event of an emergency.
“An evacuation order can save your life, leave as soon as evacuations orders are given by fire and law enforcement officials to avoid being caught in fire, smoke or road congestion. Residents that refuse to evacuate put their own and other people’s lives at risk,” the department said in a statement.
