An investigation into an Ohio firefighter's apparent overdose death last month has led to accusations of on-duty drug use by other firefighters.
According to an internal investigation, Lt. Justin Graham and Lt. Josh Cleland and Capt. Chris Olson of the Liberty Township Fire Department allegedly bought, sold and used drugs while at the station, WKBN-TV reports. Graham also was accused of driving an ambulance under the influence and nearly striking a pedestrian.
Olson denied knowing of any drug use on the job. But investigators allege that text messages indicated he was aware and participated.
“Obviously, it was disappointing and very disconcerting, and we’re extremely upset that this happened and was happening under our watch,” Liberty Township Trustee Arnie Clebone told WKBN.
The allegations come as authorities were investigating the April 12 overdose death of firefighter John Beard. Since the accusations became public, Graham and Cleland have resigned and Olson has resigned.
Another firefighter, Capt. Inspector Cathy Macchione, was demoted and placed on paid administrative leave stemming from the investigation, according to WKBN. Disciplinary charges also are pending against her.
Although criminal charges haven't been filed, the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force said it's continuing to investigate. A raid of Cleland's house Wednesday uncovered multiple guns and other illicit items, WKBN added.
