KS Department Reinstates Mandatory Retirements

Feb. 2, 2022
The City of Topeka has voted to reinstate mandatory retirements for public safety members.

A vote Tuesday night by the Topeka City Council will reinstate mandatory retirement rules for Topeka Fire and Police Departments.

The ordinance states any sworn member of the fire department must retire no later than the age of 60. Sworn members of the Police Department must retire by the age of 67, according to a report by WIBW 13.

The passing of the ordinance does not affect the chiefs of either department.

The ordinance does provide a grace period for current employees of the department who attained the age of sixty (60) years between September 18, 2019 and June 30, 2022. They have until September 30, 2022 to retire.
