A former Prince George’s County firefighter has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to distributing and possessing child pornography, the county state’s attorney’s office announced Wednesday.

Joshua Murphy, 36, pleaded guilty to two counts of distribution of child pornography and four counts of possession of child pornography, according to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Murphy was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with all but 10 years suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation.

“Those entrusted with protecting our communities are held to a high standard,” State’s Attorney Tara Jackson said in a statement. “A firefighter is someone we call when we need help, which makes this defendant’s actions extremely disturbing.”

A Baltimore-based attorney for Murphy could not immediately be reached for comment.

Jackson said the conviction holds Murphy accountable for conduct that violated the trust placed in him and praised prosecutors and law enforcement officers involved in the case.
