Amputee FL Firefighter Encouraging Others to Follow Dreams

Nov. 15, 2022
Hillsborough County Firefighter Patti Valero says it's not about the big shots, but great ones.

The loss of a leg isn't slowing down a Hillsborough County firefighter.

Patti Valero has made adjustments since a wrong-way drunk driver struck her motorcycle in 2009, Fox13 reported.

She battled back to duty but didn't stop there.

"I was a bowler who was going to turn professional. Your weight leg, if you're right-handed, is your left foot."

She found a set of golf clubs, dusted them off and hit the links. Though she won a dozen tournaments, there was something missing.

"The more I won, the worse I felt," Valero told a reporter.

That's when she started to focus on purpose behind that swing. She's hoping her story will encourage others to pick up a club or do whatever to follow their dreams.

"I think that's what we're put on this earth for, to help each other. And I think that's kind of what we're getting away from. My path was to give someone light that thinks their light is about to go out,,,It's not about the great big shots. It's about the great little shots that you string together."
