The theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 4–10, is "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower!"

Although the NFPA, who is the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week, does not currently track the number of lithium-ion battery-related home fires in the United States, the growing number of lithium-ion battery explosions and fires reported by news organizations, fire departments and other sources highlights the risks they pose. To reduce lithium-ion battery-related home fires and fires elsewhere, this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign aims to better educate the public on how to charge lithium-ion-powered technology safely.

According to Lorraine Carli, who is the vice president of outreach and advocacy, “Because lithium-ion batteries are a newer technology, not everyone is aware of the potential dangers they present, particularly when it comes to charging them safely. Our goal for this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is to help people make informed choices and practice simple habits that can help greatly reduce these risks.” 

This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is supported by the following key messages:

• Charge larger devices, such as power tools, e-bikes and scooters, outside and away from exits.
• Charge devices on a firm surface. The battery may overheat on soft surfaces because ventilation is blocked and heat can get trapped.
• Stop using your device if it begins to bloat, smoke, feels extremely hot or has an odd scent.
• Use the manufacturer-included charger and cord, or an approved one.
• When your device is fully charged, unplug it.
• Keep your device visible when charging on an airplane. Devices should not be charged in overhead containers. Vapes and e-cigarettes should not be charged on airplanes.

Every October, North America recognizes Fire Prevention Week, which is the oldest public health event in American history. Fire Prevention Week has been promoting awareness of the dangers of home fires and strategies to reduce them for over a century.

Every year, local fire departments, schools and community organizations play a vital role in bringing Fire Prevention Week to life by sharing fundamental yet important fire safety information.
