Gas Line Rupture, Power Lines Create Issues for Portland, OR, Firefighters

A downed power line and a ruptured natural-gas pipeline created additional obstacles to firefighters trying to battle a Southeast Portland townhouse fire early Tuesday morning, fire officials said.
Portland Fire & Rescue crews arrived at the townhouse at around 5 a.m. to find a downed power line and the building in flames, authorities said in a statement. Fire officials didn’t give a specific address for the fire.
Crews quickly discovered that natural gas from a ruptured pipeline was “actively burning” but the fire wasn’t limited to the area near the gas leak, officials said.
Firefighters were able to confirm that all residents were safely out of the townhouse while crews successfully knocked down the blaze. Firefighters were also able to secure the power line as well, officials said.
Northwest Natural Gas ultimately cut the flow of gas to the broken pipe, officials said.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known, and the fire is under investigation.
Officials didn’t report any injuries.
