Detroit Firefighters Rescue Two from Apartment Building Fire
Two people suffered injuries in a fire at an apartment complex early Thursday on Detroit's west side, officials said.
A firefighter also suffered a minor injury, Deputy Fire Chief Lorenzo Robertson said.
He said crews were called at about 5 a.m. to a two-story apartment building on fire on Webb Street. The building is located in the 2200 block near Rosa Parks Boulevard and Tuxedo Street.
What crews found
Robertson said firefighters were told civilians might have been trapped inside the building. The first fire company arrived within 5 minutes and 49 seconds, he added.
"Fire was going through the roof of the complex," the deputy chief said. "There were civilians attempting to jump from second-floor windows, but fire crews arrived with ladders and assisted those trapped civilians down. It was a great job by the members of the Detroit Fire Department through their quick response."
Firefighters contained the fire and kept it from spreading beyond 10 to 12 apartment units in the building, he said.
"The fire was downgraded from a three-alarm to a standard box alarm fire," the deputy chief said.
He said a man and a woman, both in their 50s, were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. Robertson added that a firefighter also injured an ankle, but was walking around on it and would have it examined later.
Officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Michigan fires
The fire follows others in the region earlier this month.
Last week, a man died, and several people were injured in an assault and residential fire in Monroe Township.
Two weeks ago, a fire damaged a home in Hadley Township, and many items were stolen from the property, including more than 400 exotic animals.
Also this month, a Pittsfield Township woman was arrested for allegedly setting fire to a utility pole, disrupting power for thousands of customers.
