Nov. 17--A barking dog alerted homeowners in Daytona Beach that their residence was on fire Thursday, and while they escaped uninjured, there was extensive damage to the two-story wood-frame building.

Flames and heavy smoke were coming from the rear of the building in the 200 block of Hartford Avenue when firefighters from the Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach fire departments arrived, Daytona Beach fire Lt. Larry R. Stoney said

"Fire crews made an aggressive attack on the interior of the home but were quickly pushed back by heavy flames," Stoney said. "The fire was challenging for firefighters to fight due to the 1920s style construction of the home."

Firefighters eventually made it back into the structure and brought the fire under control after cutting several holes in the roof to vent the smoke and flames, Stoney said.

The fire apparently started in a wall near an outlet where a freezer was plugged in, Stoney said. It spread throughout the second floor roof and attic area, causing an estimated $75,000 in damage, he said.

Firefighters salvaged most of the contents on the first floor, but the second floor of the home was destroyed, Stoney said.
