A Florida fire chief was enjoying some off-duty activity this past weekend when she quickly sprang into action to save a life.
The Pensacola News Journal reports that Pensacola Fire Chief Ginny Cranor was off duty and playing tennis on Sunday when a man on a nearby court suffered a cardiac episode and fell to the ground.
Chief Cranor, who had been on the Pensacola State College courts playing for about an hour, rushed over to immediately begin performing life-saving CPR measures on the unresponsive man and has been credited with saving his life.
"I threw my phone at my friend and said 'Call 911,'" the chief said. "We had a very rapid response from Pensacola Fire Department crews. As they’re walking up, I’m providing them some insight into what has been happening and where we need to go next. They took over the scene and put an AED on and were able to defibrilate the victim.”
The chief said her crew established an airway and provided the man with oxygen, and by the time Escambia County EMS units arrived to transport him to the hospital, his circulation had returned.
Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson offered high praise of his fire chief while discussing the incident during a weekly press conference.
"She's a great representative of who we are here at the city of Pensacola, and I just wanted to again thank her for the work she does every day."
