Officials said five people were killed and more than a dozen were injured in a shooting during the Highland Park July Fourth Parade Monday morning.

The parade kicked off at 10 a.m. and the shooting started about 10 minutes later, according to Fox32Chicago.com.

Just after 12 p.m., police said this is still an active incident because they are still looking for the shooter.

“I heard 20 to 25 shots, which were in rapid succession. So it couldn’t have been just a handgun or a shotgun," Miles Zaremski told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Video from the scene showed people running away from the shooting and as people fled, others got up from their viewing locations and followed.

Witnesses said police were making announcements: “Everybody disperse, please. It is not safe to be here.”

Five people were taken to Evanston Hospital and 26 were transported to Highland Park Hospital, according to a statement from NorthShore University Health System.
