Pentagon Flag Heads For Gound Zero

A flag that flew over the Pentagon and accompanied U.S. troops to Afghanistan is now headed for ground zero. Runners left the Pentagon early Sunday morning, intent on carrying the banner over the 467-mile route. It will pass from runner to runner along the way and will also be carried past the Flight 93 crash site in Pennsylvania.

The Department of Defense is sponsoring the relay to honor all of the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Active duty and reserve forces from all military services, Defense Department civilian workers, retirees and midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy will be participating. Members from the four military services will participate in the final leg of the journey.

Officers from the New York Police Department will meet the group at the Holland Tunnel and escort it to ground zero. The flag will be turned over to the New York City mayor at 9 a.m. on Sept. 11.
