This workshop will consist of a systematic review of the role of leadership in today’s fire service.  The curriculum is modeled after the leadership training programs currently attended by company officers in the FDNY upon promotion to the ranks of lieutenant and captain.  The course will identify the characteristics & traits of successful leaders and the skill sets that are required to manage effectively in the modern emergency service workplace.  The material will be presented in a lecture / guided discussion format with scenario based group activities.

Bob Burns - is a 36 year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) serving as a Battalion Chief for the past 18 years. In addition to having been an adjunct instructor teaching leadership at John Jay College, BC Burns also headed the curriculum development group responsible for designing and delivering the leadership modules fo the FDNY promotional training courses for lieutenants, captains, and battalion chiefs. He served as the Director of the New York State First Line Supervisor's Training Program at the FDNY Fire Academy from 2007 until 2010. Chief Burns currently conducts leadership workshops for fire departments around the country and continues to teach leadership at the FDNY Training Academy.

Cancellation Policy

The following topics will be covered in this leadership workshop; Promote Yourself, Find Your Voice, Know the Tools of Your Trade, Organizational Culture and Climate, Communicate Effectively, Influence / Motivation / Change. Each topic will contain specific executable skills that the student will be able to use when implementing the theories contained in the curriculum.  The skill sets developed in the class will enable the students to have a positive impact on training, safety and performance of the members that they supervise.
