Md. Firefighters: No Sprinklers, No Habitat Help

Washington County firefighters backed down from plans to help build a Habitat for Humanity house because it won't include a sprinkler system.
HAGERSTOWN, MD -- Washington County firefighters won't be picking up their tools to help build a Habitat for Humanity house unless it is going to be equipped with a sprinkler system.

Members of the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association had originally planned to help build the house but decided against it because it won't include a sprinkler system, according to The Herald Mail.

Blaine Snyder, the president of the First Hagerstown Hose Co., said that after the first vote, his company decided it would go against their beliefs to help build a house without sprinklers, the newspaper reported.

When concerns were raised, the association, voted 21-2, with one abstention, to only participate if there would be sprinklers, reports indicated.

Washington County and the city of Hagerstown require sprinklers for some new construction, but not for single-family detached homes.

HH officials said the cost of home construction would go up if sprinklers were installed.
