Metal groaned, tires squealed and the sickening sound of a horrendous crash rocked the community of Chester on January 18.
At 1149 hours, a call was dispatched to 2900 W. Hundred Road in Chesterfield County for a MVA, vehicle versus a fuel oil truck.
Responding were Trucks 3 and 14, Engines 1, 17, Haz Mat 15, Ambulance 526, Medic 12, Medic 17, TSO, Battaion One and Battalion Two. Chesterfield County Police, Virginia State Police and Motorist Assistance were on scene for traffic control, crowd control and to assist rescue as needed. Virginia State Police Med-Flight EMS-1 was dispatched for transport of a red patient.
Crews arrived to find a severly damaged vehicle and a fuel oil truck dented and leaking oil.
Crews began patient assessment, then extrication. While the operation was going on to save the crash victims, Haz Mat contained the dangerous spill and monitored the fuel truck.
One patient, a teen, was pronounced dead at the scene. Teen number two was Med-Flighted to VCU Medical Center. The driver of the fuel truck and the driver of the car sustained very minor injuries.
Police said the car swerved in traffic, crossed the cement median and struck the fuel truck head on.
The teen transported to VCU Medical Center later died.
Officials said when the car struck the fuel truck, the driver lost steering power and was merely along for the ride. The truck stopped atop an embankment beside a busy restraurant and beside a utility pole.
Police have not said if charges will be filed. The teens who died were 18 and 16 years old.
