MILWAUKEE --

An 8-month-old child died in a house fire Wednesday night.

The fire broke out just after 10 p.m. near 18th and Wright streets in Milwaukee.

Fire officials said the 8-month-old and her two older sisters ages 2 and 3 were in the upstairs unit alone, but there were adults in the downstairs unit.

The infant's two older sisters escaped.

Firefighters said the second floor of the duplex was fully engulfed, but the fire was most intense in the area of the baby's bedroom.

A Milwaukee firefighter suffered a minor hand injury in the fire and was taken to St.Luke's Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters said this is the first child fatality from a fire in at least two years.
