FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --
Firefighters rescued two men who were dangling from a safety harness outside a Fort Lauderdale apartment building after their scaffold gave out from under them.
The incident occurred as the two men were doing repair work on the 17-story building at 2201 N. Ocean Blvd. shortly after 2 p.m.
Firefighters on a 14th-floor balcony were able to pull one man to safety. He was strapped to a safety harness and hanging onto the vertical scaffold.
Another man was hanging by his safety harness outside Michael Byrne's ninth-floor apartment.
"I heard something fall and I heard something hit the ground, so I looked out and I saw feet swinging right in front of me," Byrne said.
Ivan Cornell spent nearly an hour dangling outside Byrne's window before firefighters rescued him, pulling him in through the window.
"They're my heroes," he said of the firefighters who rescued him.
Both men appeared to be OK.
