STEUBENVILLE, Ohio --

Firefighters said six dogs were killed during a house fire Thursday night in Steubenville.

The home on 710 Kendall Street caught fire at about 8 p.m. Officials said the owner was working on the gas line of his car, when the fire started. It spread from the garage to the home.

"All of the people in the house are out safely. When we arrived on the scene, they did say they had some pets still inside," said Carlo Capaldi, the assistant fire chief in Steubenville.

Capaldi said they found two dogs in the basement, and four puppies upstairs. All six perished in the flames.
