Richmond firefighters were roused during the early morning hours to battle over two dozen arson fires on April 10,2006.

Lt. Keith Vida of Richmond Fire Department said fires had been started in over a dozen trash cans and dumpsters on different streets.

Vida said the first call came in around 0200 hours. Firefighters were literally jumping from street to street Vida explained.

A witness said at one time for a ten block radius there was a fire truck on every street corner.

Thirty-eight dispatches went out between 0200 and 0330 hours, Officials said. Fires totalled around twenty-five.

Vida said between 0400-0500 hours a few more fires were called in.

No-one was evacuated but residences were threatened by fire.

Vida said the fires were mostly debris, old furniture, trash cans and dumpsters but there was some damage done. One vehicle, Vida continued, sustained thousands of dollars of damage. One apartment building had the outside walls scorched, while the structure had occupants inside. Outside burn damage also occurred on another building.

The damages that totalled over $200 said Vida, are Class 4 Felonies. The Class 4's he explained, carry a penality of two-ten years jail time and a fine of up to $100,000 for each offense.

The Richmond Fire Investigation Unit and Richmond Police are investigating the arsons.
