CENTER LINE, Mich. --
An 8-year-old boy died after he was trapped on the second story of his burning home on Harding Street in Center Line around 4:15 a.m. Thursday.
Neighbors said they were awakened by screams and came out to find a woman and her daughter on the roof of a blazing home.
Fire officials said Nola Carr and her daughter, Tanya Carr, 14, escaped the blazing home by jumping off the second-story roof.
Nola and Tayna were treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital for burns and released.
Fire officials said Spencer Carr's body was later found at the top of the second story stairs.
"She (Spencer's mother) was just inconsolable," said Al Innes, who tried to help the victims.
Fire investigators are not sure what caused the fire, but they are using K-9 dogs to be sure there are no signs of arson.
The second story of the home partially collapsed onto the first floor, said firefighters.
Some of the Neighbors are worried about the structure of their own homes and are already making plans.
"We're moving. I want a first floor. I don't want a second floor. They're too old. That house lit up like a match stick," said neighbor Frank Bartolotta.
Van Dyke Road between 10 Mile and 11 Mile roads was closed while firefighters battled the blaze. It has since reopened.
