(Upper West Side-WABC, September 8, 2005) - A fast-moving fourth-alarm fire ripped through a large apartment building on the Upper West Side this morning, killing one man and injuring 17 others.
Eyewitness News reporter Ken Rosato has the story. Fire officials say, the fire flared through several floors of the six-story building at 964 Amsterdam Avenue just before three o'clock this morning.
One man, a resident in his 50s, was pronounced dead.
At least 17 others are were reported as injured, including two seriously burned in the flames. One victim, a man, sustained second-degree burns to 30 percent of his body. He was taken to a nearby hospital. Another, a man, was burned over 70 percent of his body.
Five firefighters were among the injured, but were not seriously hurt.
The fire appeared to have started on the first floor of the building and quickly spread through all six stories.
Eyewitness News has learned, twenty families were was contacted to shelter displaced residents. The buildings department will assess the structural stability of the building's main stairwell.
