Nine firefighters were injured while battling a house fire on Detroit's east side Monday night.

Firefighters became trapped in an attic while attempting to extinguish the blaze at the home located at East Forest and Lakewood Street, according to Local 4 reports. Additional firefighters went into the home to rescue the trapped firefighters, the station reported.

Nine firefighters were transported to St. John Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, Local 4 reported. One remained hospitalized Tuesday morning.

The homeowners escaped safely. A man, who did not want to be identified, said he smelled smoke and "could see fire in the basement" before he escaped.

The family believes they lost all of their personal items in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
