An arson fire blackened about 15 brushy acres in Mission Trails Regional Park Thursday, closing a nearby thoroughfare and creating anxious moments for area residents but causing no structural damage or injuries.
Someone intentionally sparked the slow-moving blaze on a hillside off Golfcrest Drive in the Lake Murray area about 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials.
About 50 crew members attacked the flames on the ground and aboard two emergency-services helicopters, SDFRD public information officer Maurice Luque said.
Police closed off a section of Mission Gorge Road to allow the aircraft to land, causing heavier-than-usual traffic in the area.
It took firefighters about 45 minutes to gain full control over the flames.
Investigators concluded that the blaze was an act of arson, according to Luque, but he declined to say what led to that ruling.
