Des Moines Firefighters To Auction Custom Motorcycle

Sept. 11, 2006
The auction will be held Oct. 27.

Des Moines firefighters are auctioning off a custom-built motorcycle for their burial fund.

The motorcycle is painted with images of firefighters working in Des Moines and New York firefighters battling the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001.

Proceeds will go to the families of Dan Nichols, a Des Moines firefighter who was killed while driving home from a 48-hour shift, and firefighter Mike Vavone, who died of lung cancer.

"We wanted to pay tribute (to) not only the two Des Moines firefighters that died in the line of duty, but everybody that has serviced and protected their community by being a firefighter and paid the ultimate price," said Des Moines firefighter Dan Lamb.

The bike will be auctioned off Oct. 27.

Raffle tickets are $20. To order a ticket, send a check or money order to:
