A house fire in Racine is responsible for killing a woman and her great-granddaughter Saturday night.
The grandfather, Jessie Rowell, was able to get out of the home.
"I heard the smoke detector and then I heard a boom," said Rowell. "And I came up stairs, tried to put the fire out to get in the room, but the flames were coming toward me. I didn't know what to do."
Rowell said he watched helplessly as a raging fire swept through the home killing his wife of 27 years and their 4-year-old granddaughter.
Rowell said the fire spread quickly throughout the house, leaving no room for him to get in and save his family.
Racine firefighters are still investigating the exact cause of the fire.
Police said Mottie Sanders and Damia Greer died of smoke inhalation.
Investigators think the fire started when a cigarette ignited a couch.
