HOUMA, La. (AP) -- A house fire here killed an elderly couple early Tuesday.

Houma Fire Chief Brian Hebert said the fire had been burning for some time before rescuers received the call for help, likely because the home's windows were covered - some with plywood, others with what looked like storm shutters. That prevented passing motorists and neighbors from spotting the flames.

The victims' bodies were found shortly after the fire was put out. Their names were not available. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
