KINGSTON, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities say a former Kingston firefighter awaiting trial on arson charges for an alleged October fire has confessed to setting fire to a church.

Glen Armes was arrested yesterday. But before he was taken into custody, a deputy pulled him over for speeding not far from the Scarborough Memorial Free Methodist Church.

Armes told the deputy he had cut his finger and was rushing to buy a bandage. Minutes later, however, the deputy got a call about the church fire and went to the scene.

He left soon after to try to find Armes. When he couldn't, he returned to the church where he discovered Armes observing the blaze.

He was arrested and also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana. His bond is set at 77-thousand dollars.

Kingston is about 30 miles southwest of Knoxville.
