CUMMING, Ga. (AP) -- About 50 rescuer worked through the night and into Tuesday morning in an effort to dig out a construction worker who was buried after a trench collapsed at a new subdivision.
Workers were called in from Cobb and Gwinnett counties to aid the Forsyth County rescue workers.
The trench collapsed around 9 p.m. Monday as construction crews were digging sewer lines at a subdivision construction site. Officials believe the worker was trapped in an air pocket. He was buried up to his neck.
By 6 a.m. Tuesday, officials said they were close to getting the man out of the trench. But then water began seeping into the trench, delaying their efforts.
In the meantime, Forsyth County Fire Deputy Chief Dwight said rescuers were trying to keep the trapped worker comfortable by sending down oxygen and warm air.
