INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A neighbor pulled two people from their burning home and passing motorists helped take care of the victims until firefighters arrived, authorities said.

Hilda Frazier, 72, was in critical condition, and Robert Leech, 92, was in serious condition Monday at Wishard Memorial Hospital, with injuries from the Sunday fire at their home across from Butler University's Hinkle Fieldhouse on the city's north side.

Fire Capt. Gregg Harris said Stephen Foster, who lives next door, was inside his home with other family members when they heard a noise, then saw the fire.

Foster ran into the home to pull Leech and Frazier to safety, Harris said.

Motorists, including Thom Jamerson and his son John Jamerson, helped Foster once he had gotten the two outside.

They tried to reassure Frazier, who was badly burned. And they helped Leech into the back of John Jamerson's minivan to stay warm until firefighters arrived.

Foster was in fair condition Monday at Wishard, a spokeswoman said.

``He did an extraordinary job,'' Harris said. ``I told him, 'You did our job and then some.'''

Harris said firefighters were still trying to determine the cause of the blaze. Firefighters estimated damage at $170,000.
